We've been using the LG Chocolate phone for a month and it's certainly an attractive device, possibly the best looking phone ever: from the bright red touchpad to the glossy body, this device exudes class and style. . However, like many style icons, there are issues beneath the surface and while we're big fans of the chocolate phone, it's definitely not a perfect device.

Diploma
The LG Chocolate Phone is the most attractive phone we've seen this year. With a transparent body and bright red touch panel, this phone surprised everyone. It definitely has that wow factor at first, but after a few weeks of use you might find that not everything is perfect. The touchpad looks great, but it's not always responsive, and lacking external storage, it won't replace your iPod nano.
It is currently available from O2, T-Mobile, Carphone Warehouse and phone4u in monthly installments.
Project
Exceptionally for aCell phoneIn the review, the first thing worth mentioning about the LG Chocolate Phone is the packaging. It's without a doubt the most beautiful box to ever grace a cell phone reviewer's desk. Like a Japanese paint box, this rectangular black case appears to be designed for fine badger brushes, not a cell phone. Luckily, this phone is also particularly attractive and doesn't feel out of place when you detach the magnetic clip on the front of the case and flip it open.
When you take the phone out, you will notice how thin it is in addition to its minimalist design. It measures only 15mm, not as thin as the tiny oneSamsung p300but it's still very cheap. It's also lightweight, weighing just 83g, 16g less than asony ericsson w810iand about the same weight as thatNokia 7280.

The LG Chocolate Phone has a glossy look and a slim profile
The front of the LG Chocolate is black and appears almost transparent when the screen is off, apart from a silver border around the OK button and a small silver LG icon at the top. There's also a silver band separating the top of the phone from the bottom. The rest of the device is completely black.
The front screen measures 33 x 40 mm and displays 262,000 colors. It sits behind the black border of the case, so when it's off it blends in with the rest of the phone. Below the display is a touchpad that only glows red when activated and has five navigation buttons, two soft keys, a call button, and a cancel button. The touchpad is heat and touch sensitive, so it only works when you touch it with your hand and won't activate if it's loose in your pocket or pocket. After using the touchpad for a few weeks, we found that it's responsive, but not as user-friendly as a clickable button, as you can't feel if you pressed the button correctly.
Unlike other phones, the end button is on the right side rather than the front, which takes some getting used to. When you want to end a call, you can either close the phone or use the end button, but when you press the cancel button in the bottom right front corner, nothing happens. We can't think of any other phone that has an end button on the side, and it's hard to see why LG would go against convention.
Next to the end call button is a dedicated media button that provides access to the camera, camcorder and MP3 player. At the top right of the phone is the covered charging port that doubles as a headphone jack and USB port. The included headset has an integrated remote control that you can use to control your MP3 player and answer calls. It also has a 3.5mm adapter so you can plug in your own headphones if the owners don't like it. There are two volume buttons on the left side of the phone.
The back of the phone is all black and minimalistic except for another small LG logo. As soon as you pull out the phone you reveal the hidden keyboard and a 1.3 megapixel camera with flash and portrait mirror. The clasp is spring loaded so it opens easily and feels very smooth and solid. One of the benefits of having the phone behind the film is that it protects the camera lens from scratches.
The keyboard has black keys with white alphanumeric symbols, and each key is matte or glossy, creating a checkerboard effect. The keys are large and easy to press, but like all slider phones, there's not much room to maneuver at the top of the keyboard as the top of the phone gets in the way.
The chocolate phone is scratched very easily
Overall, our main issue with the Chocolate phone's design is that the glossy body, which LG says has a special coating to minimize scratches, scratches too easily. There is also the problem that fingerprints and sweat accumulate easily on the phone's surface and make it look dirty. A carrying case is included in the box, but if you don't want to pack and unpack it with every call, this isn't the perfect solution.
Characteristics
After all the fanfare of having a phone like this, it's a little disappointing in terms of features. The touchpad takes some getting used to and the feature set isn't as inspiring as thatnokia n80With phones like this, it isSamsung e900On the horizon, it looks like the Chocolate Phone may melt in the heat of these better-featured phones. What you can't forget, however, is that this was the first phone of its kind and while it suffers a bit in specs, it more than makes up for it in style, elegance and originality.
Marketed as a stylish phone with multimedia capabilities, the Chocolate Phone comes with a camera, MP3 player and 128MB of internal storage. The camera lets you change the white balance, use a timer, add effects, choose the size and resolution, and turn the flash on and off. It only has a 1.3-megapixel sensor, which is great for MMS messaging and wallpapers, and it belies the quality of the nearly year-old model.sony ericsson k750i2-Megapixel-Camera.
The MP3 player, on the other hand, works very well and has equalizer settings, shuffle mode and even animations. It works particularly well with the included headphone jack, which also lets you plug in your own headphones, control your MP3 player and take calls - all without taking your phone out of your pocket.
If you want to take photos and store MP3 files on the Chocolate phone you will need a lot of memory and as mentioned above you have 128MB of internal storage space available. Unfortunately, it's all about storage space, and if you're not satisfied with around 20-30 songs and a few photos on your phone, you're out of luck as there's no expandable memory card slot.
One solution we found to this lack of storage was to regularly back up and modify any data we had on the phone using the USB cable that came with it. Windows will automatically recognize your phone as a mass storage device and you can easily drag and drop files to and from your phone. While this is a very useful feature, we would have liked more internal storage or an expandable memory card slot.
We were also disappointed with the included PC software, which didn't seem to work on any computer we loaded it onto and didn't recognize the phone when connected. Functions that the software claims to provide, although this may have been a problem specific to our software or computer.
Another small issue we had was that the T9 text input system didn't automatically convert letters after a period to uppercase, even when we had it set to T9Abc. This meant that every time we started a new sentence we had to manually reset the T9 setting to Abc instead of abc, which was very frustrating for us.
There's also no speakerphone, meaning no conferencing or hands-free calling. We found it odd since you can play music through the speaker; You can always use the included headphone jack for hands-free calling, but we weren't happy with the lack of hands-free calling.
Otherwise everything worked well and there were small details that made it easier to use. For example, we particularly like the ability to search for recent text recipients when sending messages. This meant that instead of searching through a list of contacts every time we sent a message, we could just search the "recent list".
Other features include WAP browser, MMS and SMS messaging, Bluetooth, email client, video recorder, photo album, video album, voice recorder, calendar, notes, calculator, unit converter, world time and Sudoku game (Java).
Performance
The call tone was clear and we had no issues with background noise or audio distortion.
The camera took decent quality photos and videos for MMS messaging and display on the phone, but compared to the K750i they were blurrier and more pixelated when printed out.
Battery life was passable: it's estimated to last around 360 minutes of talk time and 200 hours of standby time.
