BROCTON -- David (Dave) C. Miller passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 5, 2023 with his loving family by his side. He was 80 years old.

Dave was born on February 12, 1943 to the late Arthur (Bud) and Virginia (Ginny) Miller.

After graduating from Brocton Central School, Dave attended the National Meat Cutting School in Toledo, Ohio. He worked as a meat cutter at various local supermarkets including Cave's Market for 10 years before he and his wife Trina opened Miller's Market in Portland, NY in 1972. Dave retired in 2009 after more than 35 years. A lifelong resident of Brocton, when not working in the shop, Dave enjoyed spending time with his family, the company of his canine friends, playing the piano and going to Lake Erie.

Survivors include his 60-year-old wife Trina (Crandle) Miller; three sons, Dean Miller, David Miller Jr. and Gregory Miller; two brothers, Gary Miller and Arthur (Sandy) Miller Jr.; and 17 nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, his brothers Robert Miller and Dale Miller and his sister-in-law Linda Miller (Dale) have also passed away.

The tour will take place on Saturday, March 11, 2023 at Portland Congregational Church, 8649 Church St., Portland, N.Y. from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. M. to 12:00 p.m. M. with the rev. Josh Ehmke officiating. The private burial will be at Portland Evergreen Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Dave's honor may be made to the Portland Congregational Church, 8649 Church St., Portland, NY 14769.

PORTLAND — Frank J. Leone of Portland, NY, died peacefully at home with his loving family by his side on March 4, 2023 after a long and brave battle with esophageal cancer at the age of 73.

Frank was born on January 26, 1950 to Frank S. and Mary (Noto) Leone in Dunkirk, NY.

He graduated from Fredonia High School in 1968 and graduated from Bryant & Stratton before proudly serving his country in the United States Navy from 1970-1974. Frank married Claudia (Sobecky) Leone on June 25, 1977.

Frank grew up in Fredonia, NY in his parents' grocery store, people knew him well. Over the years he has worked at various steel mills including True Temper and Al-Tech where he forged steel and formed lasting friendships.

In 2012, Frank retired as executive producer of Carriage House. Frank will be remembered for his endless storytelling and incredible sense of humor. He also had a passion for classic black and white films and rock 'n' roll. He enjoyed exploring endless roads across the country with Claudia on his Triumph Rocket 3 motorcycle. When not on his motorcycle, Frank could be found gardening, fixing tractors and lawn mowers, chopping down trees, and spending time on his porch or by the lake with his loving wife, Claudia, and their beloved dog, "Bazil." . Married for 45 loving years, Frank and Claudia were known to be best friends, supportive of each other and loved trying out new restaurants with friends and family.

Frank is survived by his loving wife Claudia; daughter Emily Leone of Kenmore, son Frank Leone, Jr. and wife Michelle of Memphis, TN; Brother Vincent Leone of McKinney Texas; Nieces Brenda Shipley from Rowlett Texas and Kara Leone from Dallas Texas.

A celebration of life is planned for later this summer at an outdoor location designed to honor his memory and love of the outdoors.

WESTFIELD – Mark Henry Jackson, 34, of Westfield, NY, passed away peacefully on Saturday February 11, 2023 at St. Vincent Health Center in Erie, PA with his loving family by his side. He was born on March 26, 1988 in Erie, Pennsylvania to Roger and Roberta (Smith) Jackson.

Mark attended and graduated from Westfield Central School Class in 2006. After graduating, Mark moved to California, where he worked as a farmer for several years. He loved nature, animals, fishing, being close to people and life in the canyon. Mark has always had pets that he loved such as dogs, rabbits, chinchillas and tropical fish. He also enjoyed collecting things like old bottles, sea glass, rocks, coins, and hats. Mark enjoyed reading Terry Goodkind's fantasy books. In 2018 he returned to his home in Westfield.

Left behind are her memories of her parents Roger and Roberta of Westfield, her brother Ryan (fiancé Jennifer) Jackson, Waltham, MA, and various aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded by a younger brother, Eric, who died in 1987.

All services are held privately with burial at Westfield Cemetery in Westfield, NY.

PORTLAND — Mark Alan Blakeslee, 64, of Portland, NY, died unexpectedly at his home on January 30, 2023.

Mark was born on December 31, 1958 in Westfield, New York to Dale and Dorothy (Springer) Blakeslee.

He worked for Renold, Inc. in Westfield, NY for 34 years as a train attendant and retired in 2022.

Mark enjoyed hunting and the outdoors, but most of all he spent time with his friends and family.

He remembers his 3 children, Dawn (Travis) Moffit from Portland, NY, Sarah E. Horton from Jamestown, NY and Brandon Blakeslee from Rochester, Mn., siblings Brian Blakeslee from Mayville, NY, Debbie Blakeslee from Dallas, Tx ., Tammy Haley of Todd, NC, and Nancy (Dennis) Kagey of Flushing, MI. He also left behind grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Mark was preceded in death by his stepfather; Earl Haley, his loving wife Tracy Jr.; Shannon S. Blakeslee and her sister Linda Blakeslee.

There will be a memorial service and celebration of life on Saturday, April 29, 2023, starting at 5:00 p.m. M. to 8:00 p.m. M. Mayville American Legion, 144 South Erie Street, Mayville, NY.

In lieu of flowers, the family is proposing that memorials be held in Mark's honor at Northern Chautauqua Canine Rescue, 7540 North Gale Street, Westfield, NY 14787.

BROCTON – John J. Zanghi, 95, of Brocton, NY, died on Saturday morning, January 28, 2023 at the Heritage Green Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility with the love of his life, Arlene, by his side.

John was born on February 1, 1927 in Angola, New York to the late Joseph L. Zanghi and Mary (Nicosia) Zanghi.

Mr. Zanghi previously resided at 88 Central Avenue in Brocton, NY.

John served his country during World War II in the United States Navy aboard the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt, where he was awarded Victory Metal and American Theater Metal awards before his honorable discharge.

He retired from the New York Central Railroad, Penn Central Railroad, and Conrail Railroad, and served 39 1/2 years as a signalman.

John was a member of Brocton American Legion Post 434, a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen, and a member of St. Dominic RC (formerly St. Patrick's Church) in Brocton, NY.

John was an avid fan of the New York Yankees baseball team, the Duke basketball team, and the Oakland Raiders football team.

John and his loving wife Arlene did everything together and you may have met them at bingo or the casino, they loved hanging out with family and friends at the old Brocton Diner. They enjoyed watching sporting events attended by their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

John loved working in his garden and he and his wife enjoyed driving together.

Among the survivors is his 72-year-old loving wife, Arlene (Stout) Zanghi, whom he. married 20 May 1950, son Michael Zanghi, two daughters; Debra (Daniel) Schrantz, Karen Morse (John Garverick), beloved grandchildren; Denise (John) Berry, Brian Zanghi, Dale Schrantz, Krista (Howard) Gutzman and Matthew (Emily) Morse, great-grandchildren; Kyle Schrantz, Jeydin Schrantz, Tanner Schrantz, Mikala Zanghi, Aiden Zanghi, Georgia Gutzman and Hayden Gutzman along with many loving nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by two sisters, Frances (Frank) Grabowski, Lucy (Charles) Didio, five brothers Anthony (Josephine) Zanghi, Joseph (Mary) Zanghi, Angelo (Patrica) Zanghi, Samuel (Concetta) children of Russell (Joyce) Zanghi and Vincent and Theresa Zanghi.

The team at Heritage Green and Chautauqua County Hospice provided much warmth and companionship during her journey with dementia. John certainly kept the team on their toes and had a special bond with them.

Funeral services are provided by the Morse Funeral Home of Brocton, NY.

At the request of the family, the funeral service will take place at a later date. PORTLAND – Arnold R. Tranquist, 94, of Portland, NY, passed away peacefully on Sunday evening, January 29, 2023 at the Chautauqua Nursing & Rehabilitation Skilled Nursing Facility after a short illness.

Arnold was born in Brocton N.Y. on October 3, 1928. born. by Herbert and Alice (Ellison) Tranquist.

He attended Uppsala College for two years, earned his associate's degree and was hired by Welch's. Arnold proudly served his country in the US Army for two years during the 1950-1952 Korean War and was honorably discharged. Upon returning home, he married his Connecticut girlfriend, Mary Hauser.

He had worked at Kaman Aerospace as an X-ray technician.

Arnold enjoyed golf, gardening, bowling, and travel. He was a lifelong faithful parishioner, most recently attending Portland Congregational Church. Arnold was a charter member of the Cheshire Lutheran Church and the Brocton N.Y. Tri Church Parish.

He was a member of the American Legion JW Dill Post 484 in Brocton, NY.

In addition to his parents and first wife Mary, he was preceded in death by his second wife Leona (Woleben) Ryan, whom he married in 1985, and their daughter Christine.

Gone to preserve her memories are her three children, Arnold Jr., Eric, Catherine, and eight beloved grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

WESTFIELD -- Deborah K. (Lehman) Ditch, aged 70, of Westfield, NY, formerly Ripley, died at her home on the night of Thursday, January 26, 2023.

Debbie was born on March 8, 1952 in Westfield, New York to Walter and Evelyn (Perdue) Lehman.

He attended Westfield Central School. After high school, she became a homemaker and raised two wonderful children.

Debbie enjoyed living on Lake Erie and watching the sunset with her late husband, James Ditch.

She and Jim looked forward to the annual trips to Texas to escape the cold winter weather.

When the weather permitted, he enjoyed gardening, fishing and watching his favorite football team, the Buffalo Bills. Above all, he loved spending time with family and friends, from holiday dinners to birthday parties to family picnics.

She was associated with the VFW and Westfield Moose Lodge.

Debbie will always be in our thoughts and forever in our hearts.

She is survived by daughter Michele (Larry) Dolen of Westfield, son Brian (Renee) Best of Colonial Heights, VA, stepson James Ditch, Fate, Tx., stepdaughter Kim (Bill) Doyle, Allen, Tx. . ., his sister Patricia (Ron) Claus of Westfield, 9 loving grandchildren, Alyssa Best, Joshua Dolen, Brittany Monchein, Samantha and Zachary Doyle, Jared and Teagan Best, Tyler and Mason Ditch, and 3 loving great-grandchildren, Braylon, Teddy , and Benjamin and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Debbie was preceded in death by three siblings, Ronnie, Gordon and Harold Lehman, and her sister, Elvira Mae Eldridge Lee.

DUNKIRK - Daniel E. "Dan" Chelton, 74, of Dunkirk, New York, died on January 14, 2023 at UPMC Hamot in Erie, Pennsylvania.

Dan was born on June 27, 1948 in Kittanning, Pennsylvania to Eugene R. and Norma J. (Bower) Chelton, the eldest of five children.

He graduated from Keystone High School in Knox, Pennsylvania in 1966 and has been involved in quality market management for more than 40 years.

Dan is survived by his wife, Carol E. (Hook), whom he married January 20, 1967, a daughter, Erica L. (Troy) Richerson, and a granddaughter, Shea Richerson, of Sinclairville, New York, his sister. Patricia K. (Thom) Brown of Georgetown, South Carolina and a brother, Steven A. (Dixie) Chelton of Ft. McCoy, Fla., her mother-in-law Virginia M. Hook, sisters-in-law Deborah L Miller, Betty Hook, Kristi L. (Charles) Amato, and brother-in-law Ronald R. (Trudi) arrest all of Knox, Pennsylvania and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews .

In addition to his parents, Dan was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Gerald and Mildred Chelton, his maternal grandparents, Roy and Florence Bower, his brothers David and Charles, his father-in-law Ronald K. Hook, and his brother-in-law James Miller.

MAYVILLE — William F. “Bill” Paddock, 93, of Mayville, NY, died peacefully Monday morning, January 16, 2023 at Westfield Memorial Hospital after a short illness with his children by his side.

Bill was born on September 24, 1929 in Ripley, New York to the late Frank L. and Myrtle V. (Raynor) Paddock. He attended Mayville Central School and graduated in 1948. At home, Bill returned to the dairy and worked there for another 30 years before retiring.

On July 2, 1955, Bill married the love of his life, Evelyn, in Hartfield, New York at the Church of the United Brethren. Together they raised three wonderful children.

Bill was busy during his retirement years, working seasonally for Seneca Grape in Portland, NY, was employed as a flower deliverer at Green's Flower Shop in Westfield, and was employed as a caretaker at Freay Funeral Homes in Mayville and Morse Funeral Homes in Brocton for many years.

When time permitted, Bill enjoyed reading, traveling and camping with his wife, Evelyn.

He was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church in Westfield, NY.

In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his loving wife Evelyn, aged 66, who passed away on October 15, 2021; sisters; Jenette Robins, June Freeman Cole and Julia Heil, siblings; Donald J., Paul and Merle Paddock.

Bill leaves behind 10 loving grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson throughout Mayville, NY in honor of his daughter Susan Cummings, his children Jeff (Brenda) and Randall (Janet) Paddock. Her sisters-in-law also survive; Josephine (the late Pete) Knowlton and Marian (Woody) Braley, Mickie Farr and his in-laws, Jerry (the late Gladys) Farr, Gene (the late Eleanor) Farr, Tom (Ada) Farr, and Everett "Sonny" (Kathy) Farr and several nieces and nephews.

Family and friends can call MORSE FUNERAL HOME, 51 Highland Avenue, Brocton, NY on Thursday, January 19, 2023 starting at 6:00 p.m. M. to 8:00 p.m. M. where funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 20, 2023 with Pastor Nick Perry of Westfield First United Methodist Church.

The Brocton American Legion, John W. Dill's honor guard at rank 434, will bestow all military honors on Bill.

Burial will be at Westfield Cemetery, Academy Street, Westfield, NY.

WESTFIELD -- Christine "Chris" Elizabeth VeStrand of Corinth, Maine, formerly Westfield, NY, went home to be with her Lord on her 87th birthday, December 25, 2022.

Chris was born on December 25, 1935 in Taunton, Massachusetts to Emmanuel and Lottie (Lopes) Silvia.

He graduated from Taunton High School in 1953. During the summer holidays after school, Chris worked at Foster Metal and worked there where his mother worked in the curtain factory from 1954-1955.

Chris married the love of her life, Allen VeStrand, on July 6, 1957, and together they raised four children.

After all her children were in school, Chris began working at Westfield Veterinary Hospital in early 1972 and retired in 1999 after 27 years. She and Allen moved to Ellenton, Florida in 2012, enjoying the warmth and beauty that Florida has to offer.

Before moving to Florida, she was active at her church, Westfield First Baptist Church, where she enjoyed helping out at social events and in the kitchen. He was a member of the Department of the Interior and the Westfield YWCA.

When time permitted, Chris enjoyed crocheting, knitting, crafts, sewing, jewelry making, reading and was known for throwing the best Christmas Eve parties and celebrations. She enjoyed watching comedy shows and was an avid Buffalo Bills fan.

Gone to preserve his memory were his children: Kathleen (Terry) Burns, Nancy (James) Zoda, Jeffrey (Jennifer) VeStrand, and Sherri (Steve) Cochran, with whom he lived in Maine. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and his brother Daniel (Pat) Silvia of Taunton, Maine.

In addition to his parents, Chris was preceded in death by his loving husband Allen Cornell VeStrand, who passed away on September 29, 2021.

No prior visits are honored at Chris' request, all services are private.
